How to Assign a Google Form to Students in Google Classroom or by Email and See Student Responses

A step-by-step on sending Google Forms to students and viewing their answers. You do not need Google Classroom to send Google Forms. They work just as good through email. Google Forms are an easy way to collect and grade student answers of math assignments completed online. In this post is a link to a video showing how to make any Google Form self-grading.

I've been updating my pdf math activities to include Google Form versions and sharing the updates on social media, but I never actually stopped to write a post covering how to assign a Google Form to students! A friend mentioned doing this and it was a giant facepalm. So this post is meant to help you assign Google Forms to students who are working online. 


I love Google Forms as a way to digitize math task cards because the answers are collected into a nice, neat spreadsheet that is easy to grade. You can even make them answer-validated or self-grading. All of my digital math escape rooms are answer-validated Google Forms, eliminating the need to grade. 


*You do not need Google Classroom to send Google Forms to students. You can assign a Form in Google Classroom or you can share the form via email. Each way works great and both ways automatically collect student answers for you to view. I will show both ways in this post.

First, you'll need a Google Form to send to students. The one in this post is a Slope Mystery Message! activity that is part of my free math resource library. You can get it and a bunch more free math resources immediately send to your email by subscribing. 


Step 1: Make a copy of the Google Form for your Google Drive. Links that are shared are usually set to force copy, so this should be pretty automatic. 

Click into the form to open it.



Step 2: Click the purple SEND in the top right corner. 




Step 3 (if sending by email): If you are sending by email, click the little letter icon and enter student email addresses.

If you are sending by email, you can skip down to Step 7.




Step 3 (if assigning in Google Classroom): If you are adding the Form to your Google Classroom, click the little link icon then Copy.




Step 4: In Google Classroom, click the Classwork tab then +Create then Assignment.




Step 5: Paste the link you had copied.




Step 6: Click Assign. This is where you can choose a due date.




Step 7: Once the assignment's due date has passed, go back to the original Google Form you had added to your Google Drive in Step 1 and toggle to Responses. This is where you can see student answers.

  1. I am unable to get the purchased Google form "Escape room" into my Google forms. I am told it is because I am not the author of the form and that since I am not the author I will not be able to collect the responses. Can you give me some guidance on this? I understand how to make a Google form, assign a Google for in Google Classroom, look at the responses etc.

    1. Please send me an email to shana@scaffoldedmath.com. If you click on the link inside the PDF, this should be prompting you to make a copy. This copy is then yours to edit.

  2. We are a microsoft campus. Will google forms still work for me? I am very "tech challenged."

    1. Thank you for asking this. Yes, as long as you yourself have access to a Google Drive where the Form can be housed. Students do not need to be signed into Google, or even gave Google accounts, to use Google Forms. When you open the Form, there will be a purple "send" button in the top right corner. Clicking this will bring up a pop-up where you can grab the send link. This link can be shared with students no matter the platform they are on.

  3. I successfully uploaded the "Escape Room" to Google Classroom and I even checked several of my students responses. However, I cannot get back to view my students responses and I cannot view the rest of my class' work. If I click on the link I created for my students, it thinks I am a student and will only allow me to complete the form. What do I do to see all my students work?

  4. Because the Form is answer-validated, you'll be able to view a student's response once they have successfully solved every puzzle and clicked "submit" at the end. You'll then see their name in the Responses tab on the teacher version of the Form (the one housed in your Google Drive). If this isn't clear, my email is shana@scaffoldedmath.com

  5. Do I need a copy for each student? Usually, if I assign something for them to work on, like slides, they have to have their own copy. Is this the case with this activity?

    1. It's a little different with Forms that it is with Slides because instead of shared, Forms are sent. To do this, you do have to completely open the Form. In the upper right corner of the Form there is a "SEND" button. When you click that, you'll have a few options for how to send the link to students. You can copy the link and share it with students. Every student gets sent the same link with Forms.

    1. The original, teacher version of the Form has to be housed in a Google Drive. The links I share are a force-copy links, so they prompt you to make a copy of the original Form for your Drive. You can edit this original, if you like. Then from inside the Form, there's a purple "Send" button that will generate its own link. It's this link you share with students. You can paste this link into Canvas or anywhere else students may be working. Students don't need to be signed into Google or even have Google accounts to complete the Form.

  7. I have changed districts and no longer have access to my Google Account from my previous district. The form now is telling me I need access. Is there a way I can transfer my digital escape rooms to my new Google Account?

    1. Once students submit their work, go back to the teacher version of the Form that is in your Google Drive. Open the Form and there will be a Responses tab in the middle at the top.
