7 Fun Activities for Teaching Integers


Integers seem to follow students as they move through middle school to high school. Especially with adding and subtracting integers, the "rules" are vague, and students really need to develop a conceptual understanding of what's going on when working with these tricky numbers. In this post are a bunch of integer activities that will help foster deeper understanding or integers while also being fun. 

Whether you're introducing the concept of integers or looking to reinforce student understanding, the activities in this post have you covered.


Print and Digital Number Puzzles

This past week I started making some math puzzles that come print and digital form. The digital versions are drag-and-drop in GOOGLE Slides. In this post I want to show you the math puzzles that cover adding fractions, adding 2-digit decimals and adding integers. These fun math puzzles make for engaging classwork, station activities, partner work and review.

My daughter and I recently worked on a 550-piece puzzle, which took us just under a week to complete. We worked on it on the floor a bit each day after school, hiding it from the cats each night. It had been over 20 years since I had worked on a puzzle that was more than 30 pieces (kid puzzles), so it surprised me how much we both enjoyed it. Figuring out where the pieces went was relaxing and enjoyable, and I could feel it exercising my brain in ways that it doesn't usually exercise.

Working on that puzzle with my daughter got me thinking about making puzzles, so this past week I started making some math puzzle sets that cover various curriculum topics. Students can work on these math puzzles as classwork, in centers, with a partner or as a review activity. In this post, I want to show you a few of these new math puzzles.

Integer Rules Visual References for Addition and Subtraction

In this post is a free set of visual integer addition and subtraction posters for download. The pdf file is based on amazing visual references for integer operations made by super Math Teacher Don Steward and make a helpful addition to any classroom math word wall.

We learn how to add and subtract in kindergarten. And this is about the last time addition and subtraction are easier!

When we get to the integers, there are some pretty concrete rules to follow for multiplication and division. But this isn’t so true for addition and subtraction. 

This trips kids when working on integer operation problems, solving equations, finding inverses and any other time numbers on either side of zero need to be combined. Kids get to thinking they “can’t do Algebra/Algebra 2/Geometry, etc” when really it’s all integers.

Integer Operations Cheat Sheet Graphic Organizer

If you have students struggling with integer operations, the teaching ideas in this post will help. First is an integer operations graphic organizer that helps students "see" the tricky relationship between positive and negative numbers. This graphic organizer is based on the method or looking at integers in the same way the integer operations manipulative in the post. Also includes links to multiplying and dividing integers visuals and number sense help.

With integer multiplication and division, the rules are clean and concrete. A negative times a negative is literally the "opposite of a negative" and the rules are pretty simple to remember. With addition and subtraction the rules are a whole lot looser. For students who like things nice and clear, integers can be a real sticking point. In this post, I wanted to share a free integers graphic organizer to help kids with this tricky topic.

When students feel good about themselves, they try harder. And when they try harder, they do even better! Above all else, students find more success in math when they believe that they can do well.

One easy way to build student confidence is by hanging student work. Seeing their work displayed is a constant reminder to students that they can be successful, and math pennants are a colorful and fun way to do this.

Even my seniors get excited about hanging their work on our "Fridge" (a green bulletin board with letters spelling "The Fridge" at the top). It always surprises me that they'd rather hang their papers in our classroom than bring them home!  

On days when students feel they "can't", I can point to their work on our wall and say, "Yes, you can." When students see their work hanging in our classroom, something special happens. Math pennants also bring in some added creativity, softening the math a little and making it a bit more fun. 

In this post, I want to show you some of the math pennants I've made over the years for topics covered in early elementary school right through to high school math.

Mean, Median, Mode and Range Data Math Pennant Activity


All of the ways teachers are using math pennants in their classrooms have a really nice side effect-- building confidence. Once students feel confident, they start taking more risks, which ramps up the learning. The affective filter is talked a lot about in second language acquisition. I believe this affective filter is an obstacle with math learning, too. Once that filter comes down and students start feeling that buy-in, so much learning can happen.

Displaying student work, reminding students that they CAN, helps this filter come down. Above is a Golden Spiral Back to School pennant to get kids excited for a year of math.

I've really enjoyed making math pennants from teacher requests, like the one above for comparing fraction size. Students color the fraction wheels to help with figuring out which fraction is larger.

Multiplying Fractions Math Pennant Activity


Fractions! I have had a lot of requests fractions math pennants. The multiplying fractions pennants above show fraction multiplication through the area model. Students color rows and columns to show the overlapping area what represents the fractions' product.

Ordering Real numbers math pennant


This 
ordering Real numbers pennant came from a teacher request. Students cut out 4 Real numbers and paste them in order on the pennant. I've made a similar one for ordering integers.

Above is a free math pennant for order of operations. It was one of the very first math pennants I made.

Converting measurements math pennant


This conversions pennant came from another teacher request. Students convert both metric and customary measurements in this activity. 


Ratios and proportions math pennant


And this ratios and proportions pennant also came from a teacher request. Students determine ratios represented in pictures, solve proportion equations, complete ratio tables and plot their results on a grid, determine ratios from word problems, determine if a given table represents a ratio and determine if two ratios are proportional. They can then color their pennants for a little fun.

GCF, LCM and prime factors math pennant


A teacher asked me to make her a pennant covering GCF and LCM. It asks students to find prime factors, lowest common multiples and greatest common factors. 


This Pythagorean Theorem pennant was probably one of my favorite math pennants to make.

Students solve with elimination and substitution in this solving systems of equations pennant activity. The elimination questions require one, both or neither of the equations to be multiplied.

I've made a lot of math pennants specifically for holidays. Below are a few of these.

These graphing linear equations ornaments ask students to graph linear equations in different forms. Bows and holly cutouts are included for an added layer of holiday décor.


Converting improper fractions and mixed numbers math pennant


In this Christmas fractions pennant, students convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers, then color to show the fractions. 


Pi Day math pennant


And of course every math teacher's favorite holiday-- Pi Day! This one here is for students who are comfortable with the circle formulas enough to solve for specific variables within the equations. I also made a set for younger students

One of my favorite classes to teach has been Consumer Math. Compound interest word problems are covered in this set of compound interest pennants.

Integers are so tricky, even for older students. There are 3 problems on each integers pennant so that students can practice seeing the relationship between positive and negative numbers.

This pennant came from a teacher request for one to help her students convert scientific notation. I also made more sets for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing in scientific notation.

Students of all ages love seeing their work displayed, and math pennants build student work right into your math classroom décor. Students complete the math problems on each pennant then decorate to add their unique touch. Each math pennant activity includes an optional student answer sheet and answer key.


Ideas for using math pennants: 
This is really up to you and what you feel is best for your students. Here are just a few ideas: 


Students choose: Print multiple copies of the pennant activity and put a few sheets on student tables. Students all have to complete x number, cut, decorate and hang. 


You choose: You choose which pennants each student will get. In most of the pennant activities, problems get harder throughout the activity. 


Gallery Walk/Stations: Print one copy of the pennants, cut and hang them, and have students walk around the room with clipboards and their answer sheets. At the end of class, students each choose one or two pennants to complete, decorate and re-hang as décor.
