Algebra tiles help make math visual for students, and paper algebra tiles take it a step further because we can cut them into fractions. In this post are a few short cut paper algebra tiles videos for solving 1-step and 2-step equations that include when x is a fraction.
This first equation is a simple 1-step equation where x is being divided by 4.

If you're a middle school teacher, I'm sure you've been hearing "Six Seven!" nonstop this year!
We hadn't heard it in our algebra 2 class until about a month ago, when the 67 floodgates finally opened and now "67!" is an almost daily occurrence. It came up recently when solving x^2 - x = 42 (though this was on purpose).
As math teacher Ms. Campbell wrote, "Truth be told, it's the least offensive tiktok trend in years (at least for me!) And math teachers sure can have fun with it." Very true. And it's nice that math finally made it into a trend!
This SIX SEVEN real number system sorting activity has students sorting numbers made of up of sixes and sevens into whole numbers, integers, rational numbers and irrational numbers categories. The activity includes the sorting mat, 18 numbers to sort, and a key.
Algebraic expressions can be translated, just like any other language. When middle school math students learn how to translate algebraic expressions correctly, they begin to see algebra as the language it is and more than just a random set of rules. In this post, there are a few algebraic expressions activities to help middle school math students practice translating algebraic expressions into numbers and symbols, along with some research supporting a varied approach to teaching math.
It's almost time to head back to school, and for me this means a whole new math teaching assignment. My plan for the first day of school is to get to know students' names, have them share a little about themselves through a back to school math activity, and set a few classroom expectations especially around cell phones.
In this post are a few back to school math activity ideas and classroom resources to help students ease into the new school year.
My students will make one of these back to school math name tents, which will help me get to know their names and ease them back into math after a couple months away from school. Students answer 10 questions about themselves that are all answered with numbers. The questions are ell editable, so you can change them to match what you'd like to know about students at the beginning of the school year.
This Bar About Me math activity asks students how they feel about school and about learning math. Students color their graphs based on how much they agree with the questions at the bottom. An editable version is also included, if you'd like to change any of the questions. The final graphs make a nice display and give a snapshot of each students' feelings around math and school.
These back to school math pennants become beautiful math classroom decor once they are all colored and hung around the classroom. Students color their pennants based on their answers to questions like "favorite class?" and "birth month?" When all colored in, the final pennants make colorful math classroom décor that can be displayed for back to school night.
Breaking free from this math picture puzzles escape room is a fun way for students to get to know each other while working together on the first day of school. To move to each next puzzle, students have to solve for the values of school-themes pictures and type the correct 4-letter code.
It's hard to believe it's almost the end of the school year! In this post, I want to share a few end of the year math activities to keep students engaged in these last days of school (and also having some fun).
The first is a new end of the year math escape room that comes in both digital and print form. Students use their logic to solve for the values of summer-themed pictures in equations while celebrating making it to summer break.
The digital version of the escape room is an answer-validated GOOGLE Form that eliminates your need to grade. Just check the Responses tab to see which students successfully broke out.
Students use their logic and algebraic thinking to unlock 5 locks by finding the values of summer-themed pictures in equations. Questions are grouped 4 per puzzle, resulting in five 4-letter codes that will unlock all 5 locks. All answers are positive whole numbers.
The printable version of the escape room has a NEXT STEP box that lets students know which puzzle to visit next. They can start on any of the 5 puzzles. The download also includes a printable graphic organizer to help students keep track of the pictures' values as they find them, a student answer sheet and an answer key.
This year's students give their best advice to next year's students in this dear students, my advice is pennant activity. As students walk in next year, they can read all of the good advice this year's students left for them.
Lastly, I have written about this graphing grass project so much, but only because of how much students enjoy it. Students plant grass seeds, then measure and record the growth over a few weeks. You can learn more about this project in this post.

The circle, cylinder and cone sheets come in 2 versions-- one for using 3.14 and one for using the calculator's pi button.
There are 2 versions of the word search, both with 15 Pi Day themed words to find. One word search has a 20x20 letter grid, and the other has a 15x15 letter grid. The words are the same between the two versions.
The puzzle sheets include number puzzles, picture puzzles and mazes. The number puzzles ask students to use the order of operations, arrange given numbers into a grid to make sums, arrange operations around four 4s to make given numbers, and figure out missing numbers in crossword-like puzzles.
Students simplify expressions with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and groupings on the order of operations sheet. Answers fill in missing digits of pi to the 35th digit.
The 2-step equations sheet asks students to solve equations to figure out the missing numbers in facts about Albert Einstein's life.,
The last page is a Pi Day coloring sheet for all ages featuring Albert Einstein.
Mathematician Katherine Johnson was a trailblazing NASA scientist back in the 1950s and 60s.
Her work was so important that after NASA started using computers in the late 1950s, astronaut John Glenn refused to fly on his 1962 orbit around the Earth until Johnson checked the computer's calculations by hand. She was invaluable to NASA and to the US space program for 33 years.
To give students a way to learn learn more about Katherine Johnson's life, I put together a 2-step equations color-by-number activity. The activity is editable if you would like to change any of the equations or facts for your students. You can access the activity for free here.

In the early days of NASA women were not allowed to put their names on the reports – no woman in my division had had her name on a report. I was working with Ted Skopinski and he wanted to leave and go to Houston, but Henry Pearson, our supervisor – he was not a fan of women – kept pushing him to finish the report we were working on. Finally, Ted told him, "Katherine should finish the report, she's done most of the work anyway." So Ted left Pearson with no choice; I finished the report and my name went on it, and that was the first time a woman in our division had her name on something."

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday to relax and eat delicious food with loved ones. Around here, it's the first time during the school year that we get multiple days off, so we're extra thankful for the extra downtime. In this post, I want to share with you some fun Thanksgiving-themed math activities that will keep students motivated while practicing their skills, perfect for both classroom and home learning leading up to the Thanksgiving break.
First up is a new Thanksgiving puzzles digital math escape room, where students solve for the values of Thanksgiving pictures. The digital version is no-prep in Google Forms, and is answer-validated so that it collects student work for you. The activity also comes in PDF printable form.
Students solve for each picture, then type their 4-letter code to move to the next puzzle. They can only move to the next puzzle if their code is correct. I added a graphic organizer to the activity to help students keep track of each picture's value as they find it.
Next is a set of pumpkin pennants for simplifying algebraic expressions. Students simplify their expression, then color and hang their pumpkins as classroom décor. The completed pumpkin pennants make a cozy classroom or hallway display.
Students solve proportions on these fall-themed proportions pennants, then color to decorate your classroom. Each pennant has a leaf and border to color to let students get a little creative leading up to Thanksgiving.
Lastly is a set of domain and range Thanksgiving math pennants. Each pennant is in the shape of a cornucopia and has either a continuous or discrete graph, along with spaces for domain, range, and whether the graph is a function or not. Students identify the characteristics of their graphs, then color their cornucopias to add their own creativity.
Order of operations is one of those math topics that tests student understanding year after year in school. And it even makes a regular appearance on social media! We've all seen versions of that viral PEMDAS problem going around that makes us all lose our minds:
Everywhere we look, there is data to interpret. There is data about sports,
elections, health and trends in our society. Learning how to read and
organize this data is important and empowering to students as they make
their way through their education.
Before becoming a teacher, I worked in the environmental consulting field
between leaky gas stations and the Department of Environmental Protection.
Part of my job was to collect data from soil and water samples at gas
stations, interpret this data and report on it. I learned at this job that
data interpretation is more subjective than I had thought. For example,
dropping one more monitoring well into the groundwater upstream from a
leaking tank will drop the overall average of the amount of gasoline in the
groundwater at a leaky gas station. I lasted 3 years in that field before
making the move to teaching. It wasn't for me.
And then there's the difference between mean and median when it comes to
home prices and pay. Often the median is given in these situations so that
outliers don't throw off the data making the numbers appear greater than
they are. Interpreting this data and talking about the differences makes for
interesting classroom discussion.
In this post I want to share a few fun activities you can use in your
classroom to teach data analysis.
The first is a
mean, median, mode and range digital math escape room activity. Students must unlock 5 locks by finding mean, median, mode and range in 5
sets of data. Questions are grouped 4 per puzzle, resulting in five 4-letter
codes that will unlock all 5 locks.
This one also comes in a black and white printable version in the same file
if you'd like your students to work on paper.
Next is a
box and whiskers vocabulary sort where students sort 18 vocabulary terms onto the box plot for median,
outlier, upper extreme, lower extreme, quartiles and interquartile range
(I.Q.R.), then identify mean, mode and range given the box plot's
data.
Many professions require some level of data literacy. Whether in STEM
fields, business, healthcare, social sciences, and even in the arts, the
ability to work with data is an increasingly valuable skill for students to
learn.
Data presented as real-world problems encourages students to apply their
problem solving skills and build insights into the data. This
two way tables digital math escape room activity
gives students practice analyzing and evaluating the data presented in two
way tables. Students find missing table values, answer "and" and "or"
questions and calculate percentages represented by the data in this
activity. A printable version is also included.
Next is a
mean, median, mode and range math pennant activity
that doubles as classroom décor when students finish the activity. Students
find mean, median, mode and range given either 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 single
and double-digit numbers of data. Some answers require rounding.
Students follow a stock for a week, calculate the daily and weekly percent
change in price, estimate a line of fit for their scatter plot, find the
slope and equation of their line of fit and write a final analysis of their
data in this
stock market project. Above is my student Sam's final project and written analysis of the data
he collected. We did this project in our algebra class to cover percent
change. It's also a nice project for a
consumer math class.
In this
probability digital math escape room activity, student figure out the simple or compound probability in 20 scenarios.
Students find the probability of either one or two events in each question.
Questions are grouped 4 per puzzle, resulting in five 4-letter codes that
will unlock all 5 locks.
If you're looking for a dependent compound probability activity, this compound probability error analysis activity covers independent and dependent compound probability. Students have to figure out which of the 3 statements is wrong (the
"lie") and correct the lie on their answer sheet.
Students analyze different depictions of data to find mean, median, mode,
range, totals and percentages in this
data math pennant activity. Data is presented in tables, line plots, line graphs, bar graphs,
histograms, box and whiskers plots, pie chars and sets of numbers. Students
can hang their finished pennants to show what they know as part of your
classroom décor.
This
line plots digital math escape room
comes in both self-checking digital in Google Forms and in black and white
printable PDF. It asks students to analyze and answer questions about the
data shown in each line plot.
And lastly, data representations on a 6th grade math word wall including bar graph, skew, box plot, mean, median, mode, range, circle graph, histogram, dot plot, stem & leaf and frequency table. The stem & leaf and the frequency table both use the same data (the party data in the middle) so that students can see the same data represented differently. This is also true for the circle graph and the histogram, and with the box plot and the dot plot.
